The Encoder is inserted onto the Gear Motor. The Encoder is the conduit between the control board and brew process. The control board tells the Encoder when to activate the Gear Motor (after the grinding process), which in turn, activates the Brew Group to complete the brew process. The Gear on the Gear Motor engages with the Brew Group Drive Shaft. This elevates the lower Brew Group Piston, compacting the coffee grinds into a "puck." The encoder counts the number of revolutions required by the gear motor to compact the coffee. If the required number of revolutions is not met, then a "Fill Beans" message may appear. Also, the encoder may be responsible for causing an "Error 8" to appear because the brew cycle was not properly completed. If you are experiencing either of these problems, inspect the teeth on the Gear of the Gear motor, the brew group and the grinder burrs, first. Encoders do fail, but not often.
